There's More to Tree Stand Safety Than Wearing a Harness
I've spent much of my career in the fall protection industry. Long before we designed hunting safety equipment, we were protecting workers who climbed towers, entered confined spaces, and worked hundreds of feet above the ground. In that world, suspension trauma isn't an afterthought—it's something we actively design products around and train workers to prepare for.
One thing I've noticed over the years is that hunting conversations rarely go much deeper than one simple message: "Wear your safety harness."
That's great advice. In fact, I believe far more hunters are wearing safety harnesses today than they were just ten years ago, and that's undoubtedly saving lives every season. But here's the problem. For most hunters, that's where the safety conversation ends. We don't spend much time talking about what happens after a fall.
How far should you actually fall? Where should your tether be positioned? How do you reduce the forces your body experiences? How long should you expect to remain suspended? What if you're hunting alone with no cell service?
These are questions the industrial fall protection industry has been answering for decades, and they're questions every hunter should understand before climbing into a tree. The goal isn't simply to survive the fall. The goal is to walk out of the woods.
What Is Suspension Trauma?
Suspension trauma—sometimes called Harness Suspension Syndrome—is a condition that can develop when someone remains hanging motionless in a safety harness after a fall.
Your body depends on muscle movement, especially in your legs, to help pump blood back toward your heart. When you're standing or walking, those muscles act almost like a second pump for your circulatory system.
When you're suspended and unable to move effectively, blood can begin pooling in your legs. As less blood returns to your heart and brain, symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, sweating, tunnel vision, weakness, or even loss of consciousness can develop.
The important thing to understand is this:
Your harness didn't create the problem. Your harness saved your life. Remaining suspended without a plan is what creates the emergency.
Let's Clear Up One of the Biggest Myths
If you've spent much time online, you've probably heard someone confidently say: "If you're hanging for ten minutes, you're dead."
I've heard it countless times. The truth is more nuanced. Current research doesn't support a universal "ten-minute rule." Every person, every fall, every harness, and every situation is different.
That doesn't mean suspension trauma isn't real. It absolutely is. It simply means we shouldn't rely on internet myths when we're talking about something this serious. Instead, we should focus on what we do know. Blood is meant to keep circulating. The longer someone hangs motionless after a fall, the greater the concern becomes.
That's why rescue planning matters.
Industrial Safety Looks at the Entire Fall
One of the biggest differences between workplace fall protection and hunting safety is what happens after the fall.
In industry, we don't stop after asking: "Will this harness stop a fall?"
We also ask: How far will the worker fall? What forces will they experience? Can they self-rescue? How quickly can someone reach them? What happens if they're suspended?
Those same questions apply in the woods. They're just discussed far less often.
The Biggest Mistake I See Hunters Make
If I could change one thing about how hunters use their harnesses, it would be this: Too much slack. Many hunters attach their tether low, at mid-back level, with the lanyard looping down and loose.
Think about walking a dog on a six-foot leash. If the dog bolts, he's going to hit the end of that leash pretty hard.
The same thing happens in a fall. The farther you fall before your harness catches you, the greater the forces your body experiences.
Those forces don't just affect comfort. They increase the chance of injury.
My Preferred Setup
People often ask how I set up my own tree stand. It's actually very simple.
When I'm seated, I position my tree strap or lifeline connection higher than my head, around eye level if I’m standing up, so I can just begin to feel the elastic in my lanyard taking up tension when I sit. That's intentional. If I misstep, or if my stand were to fail, I don't experience a long freefall before my harness engages. Instead, the harness catches me almost immediately.
That shorter fall means less force on my body. Less swinging. Less chance of striking the tree. Less chance of injury from the fall arrest itself.
In many situations, it also leaves me close enough to regain my footing on a climbing stick or ladder, collect myself, and safely continue the hunt after my heart rate returns to normal.
To me, this is one of the easiest and most effective changes a hunter can make.
Plan for After the Fall
Even with excellent equipment and proper setup, accidents happen. That's why I always encourage hunters to think beyond the harness.
Ask yourself: "If I fall right now, what happens next? If you don't have an answer, today's the day to make one.
Trauma Relief Straps
One of the simplest additions you can make to your hunting harness is a pair of trauma relief straps. These compact straps attach to your harness and remain tucked away until you need them.
If you're suspended after a fall, you can deploy them, place your feet into the loops, and stand periodically.
Why does that matter?
Standing shifts some of your weight off the leg straps and allows your leg muscles to stay engaged, helping promote circulation while you wait for rescue or prepare to self-rescue.
They're inexpensive. They're lightweight. They’re included in every Malta harness you buy. And in my opinion, every hunter should carry them.
Controlled Descent Devices
Another option is a controlled descent device. These systems automatically or manually lower you to the ground after a fall.
They're excellent products, especially for hunters who spend significant time in elevated stands or hunt alone.
Personally, my preference is still a properly adjusted tether combined with trauma relief straps. By minimizing my fall distance in the first place, I'm reducing the chances that I'll ever need additional equipment.
But descent devices absolutely have a place and may be the right solution for many hunters.
Hunt Like Nobody Is Coming
This may be the biggest mindset shift I can offer. I hunt alone. A lot.
Usually, my wife or brother knows where I'm hunting. But many of the places I hunt don't have cell service. Volunteer EMS may be twenty, thirty, or even forty-five minutes away. That's just the reality of rural America.
When you read stories about hunters surviving falls, many crawled hundreds of yards before reaching their truck. Others weren't found until much later. Those stories are gut wrenching because many of them were preventable.
So I hunt with one assumption: If something goes wrong, I'm my own first responder—at least for a while. That mindset changes everything.
Practical Ways to Reduce Your Risk
You don't have to quit hunting high. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars. Small changes can dramatically improve your safety.
I recommend every hunter:
- Wear a full-body safety harness every time your feet leave the ground.
- Stay connected from the moment you begin climbing until you're back on the ground.
- Keep tether slack to a minimum while maintaining freedom to hunt safely.
- Use a lineman's rope while climbing and hanging stands.
- Consider adding trauma relief straps to your harness.
- Tell someone exactly where you'll be hunting.
- Carry a charged phone or emergency communication device whenever possible.
- Practice using your equipment before opening day—not after an accident.
Final Thoughts
Tree stand hunting doesn't have to be so dangerous. In fact, with today's equipment and a little planning, it's safer than it's ever been.
A quality harness is one of the best investments you'll ever make. But don't stop there.
Think about what happens after the fall. Position your tether to minimize freefall. Carry trauma relief straps. Have a rescue plan. Tell someone where you'll be. Practice with your equipment.
